Two technologies, different treatment depths
HIFU and radiofrequency are non-surgical energy-based treatments used for selected concerns related to skin laxity. They are not interchangeable and neither is a substitute for surgery when laxity is marked.
A consultation is needed to assess skin quality, facial volume, treatment area, medical history and realistic goals before choosing a procedure.
How HIFU works
High-intensity focused ultrasound delivers energy at selected depths beneath the skin. It may be considered for suitable patients seeking gradual improvement in mild to moderate laxity, particularly around the lower face, jawline or neck.
Results develop gradually and vary between patients. Treatment parameters and suitability depend on anatomy, tissue thickness and the device being used.

Radiofrequency uses controlled heat within targeted tissue. Different RF devices deliver energy in different ways; some are applied at the surface while others use insulated or non-insulated microneedles.
The expected effect, recovery and treatment schedule therefore depend on the specific technology, settings and indication rather than the label “RF” alone.

- HIFU: focused ultrasound delivered at selected deeper tissue planes
- RF: controlled radiofrequency heating, with depth depending on the device
- Best choice: determined by examination, not by age alone
- Results: gradual and variable; maintenance may be discussed
- Downtime: depends on the method and individual response
- Limitations: neither guarantees a surgical-lift result
Who may need extra caution?
Tell the dermatologist about pregnancy, implanted electrical or metal devices, recent procedures, active infection, open wounds, altered sensation, medicines and any tendency to scar abnormally. Treatment may be postponed or avoided when safety or expected benefit is uncertain.
Planning treatment
- Assessment of laxity, skin quality and facial volume
- Discussion of the area that concerns you
- Review of previous procedures and medical history
- Explanation of likely benefit and limitations
- Choice of technology and treatment settings
- Aftercare and review plan
More treatment is not always better. Excessive or unsuitable energy can cause unwanted effects, so conservative, anatomy-aware planning matters.
How care is planned
- Assessment comes before treatment selection.
- Options, limitations, aftercare and expected timelines are explained.
- The plan is adapted to diagnosis, skin type and medical history.

HIFU and RF FAQs
Which is better, HIFU or RF?
Neither is universally better. The choice depends on the treatment depth required, skin quality, anatomy, goals and the exact device available.
Are the results immediate?
Some patients notice an early change, but improvement is generally gradual and varies. Your dermatologist can explain the expected timeline for the selected method.
Can these treatments replace a facelift?
No. Non-surgical energy treatments may offer modest improvement for selected patients but cannot reproduce the degree of correction possible with surgery.
How many sessions will I need?
The number depends on the technology, indication and response. A session plan should be made only after assessment.
Is there downtime?
Temporary redness, tenderness or swelling can occur. Downtime differs between surface RF, microneedling RF and focused ultrasound procedures.
Can HIFU and RF be combined?
Combination treatment may be considered for selected patients, but it is not automatically necessary and should be planned around anatomy, timing and safety.
