Key point

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a flat brown, grey-brown or dark mark that remains after acne inflammation. It is especially common and noticeable in medium-to-deep skin tones.

Is a dark acne mark the same as a scar?

No. PIH changes colour but does not create a pit or raised area. A scar involves a lasting change in skin texture.

A person can have active acne, PIH and textural scars at the same time, so each component should be identified.

Why do dark marks keep appearing?

Every new inflamed lesion can trigger more pigment. Picking and irritating skin care can deepen the colour.

  • Uncontrolled inflammatory acne
  • Squeezing, scratching or home extraction
  • Harsh peels or unprescribed steroid-mixed creams
  • Sun exposure without suitable protection
  • Skin-barrier irritation from too many active ingredients

How is PIH managed?

Preventing new acne is central. A dermatologist may combine acne control, gentle skin care, suitable sunscreen and selected pigment treatment according to skin type and sensitivity.

Chemical peels or laser procedures are not automatically appropriate for every dark mark. Incorrect settings or excessive treatment can worsen pigmentation.

How long do dark marks take to fade?

Fading can take months and deeper colour may persist longer. Improvement depends on pigment depth, ongoing acne, sun exposure and treatment tolerance; instant clearing should not be promised.

Frequently asked questions

Can sunscreen help acne dark marks?

Sun protection helps prevent existing pigment from becoming more noticeable and supports a broader treatment plan.

Will bleaching cream remove every mark?

No. Unsupervised strong products can irritate skin and worsen PIH. Treatment should match the type and depth of pigmentation.

Can PIH occur without acne scars?

Yes. A flat dark mark can remain even when the skin texture is normal.
